Community Pet Trusts Help More Pets
Pet Trusts Could Help Pets and Shelter Workers
Pet Trusts can impact shelter workers in addition to shelter animals and your own pet. An Applied Animal Behaviorist, Dr. Emily Weiss, created a blog post for The Association for Animal Welfare and Advancement. In the blog, Dr Weiss addresses the overwhelming feelings animal shelter workers are coping with. Hopelessness and sadness have resulted from the data trending in the wrong direction. There has been an increase in dog euthanasia over the last few post-pandemic years. Pet Trusts could decrease these feelings because they help save lives.
Dr Weiss stresses the impact of the pandemic causing this “hiccup” in the statistics. She is convinced we have the know-how and skills to move forward and return to pre-pandemic ways. She stresses the importance of everyone working together to combat the increase and to become more positive about the outcomes ahead. “Because together, we got this!” Add in Pet Trusts, and the results can greatly impact saving lives and changing feelings!
Pet Trusts Can Change the Trend
Dr Weiss requested feedback on her blog. The readers added comments, and Dr Weiss responded. Our Foundation’s Director of Operations, Debra Azzato, commented that there is a need to spread awareness about Pet Trusts to help decrease the number of dogs and cats surrendered to animal shelters due to their owner’s illness or death. Dr Weiss suggested a community resource be established for “those not fortunate enough to set up a trust for their pets,” and offered her support if this comes to fruition.
EDMAF To Establish Community Pet Trust
Our Foundation is exploring avenues to establish a “Community Pet Trust,” as suggested by Dr Weiss, so people with partial funding can apply for grants to subsidize their Pet Trusts. We are partnering with our sister organization, Guardian Pet Trust (https://www.guardianpettrust.org.) This public charity specializes in preparing and implementing Pet Trusts. We will work hand-in-hand to spread awareness about them and help our community residents prepare and fund Pet Trusts for their fur babies. Stay tuned for updates!
