Do You Have a Plan to Provide for Your Pet?

Pet Trust Because Your Pet Trusts You

We hear so many stories about what happens to beloved pets after the owner is no longer around to take care of them. If you have enough foresight and make allowances in your Will, for the care of your pet, your family could still override your wishes. There’s no guarantee that once your proposed Beneficiary/Caretaker is awarded the money to care for your pet that they actually will. It’s a documented fact that pets are often dumped at the shelter after the money is received. Sometimes, the money is not even spent on pet care. Instead, the Beneficiary Caretaker you named in your Will buys themself an expensive item, like a new car.

The legal system affiliated with a Will is only for the disbursement of the assets. There is no legal follow-up or recourse. On the chance that the money is spent on pet care, the Will does not leave instructions on how that care is to be rendered. There is no information about your pet’s choice of food or treats or daily visits to the dog park.

In contrast, when you prepare a Pet Trust, none of that can happen. Your pet will be cared for, according to your directions, by the Caretaker you choose, Your money will be spent on your pet’s care, not on frivolous items. A Pet Trust is constructed in a way that can help make sure your wishes are carried out and it is legally enforceable. Your pet should receive the same level of care you provided and continue living the same lifestyle. It’s the best way to protect and plan for your pet’s future.

Why You Need a Pet Trust

  • You love your pet as people love their children.
  • Rehoming your pet to keep it out of a shelter is extremely important to you.
  • Your pet can’t speak for itself to tell the Caretaker what he needs or wants
  • The directions you leave for your pet are like an instruction manual.
  • The money you leave for your pet’s care will only be spent on your pet.
  • No matter how old or sick your pet is, it will continue to be cared for.
  • Familiar products and services will be used and are comforting to your pet.
  • A Pet Trust can be used, when needed, while you are alive and, again, at your death.

Edwin D Marks Animal Foundation Believes Every Pet Should Have a Pet Trust Care Team

Trustee

You designate a Trustee who will manage the money in the Pet Trust account. It’s suggested that the Trustee and Caretaker are two different people so there can be checks and balances in place. The Trustee is responsible for following the guidelines of the Pet Trust and the needs of the pet when making decisions about how the funds are spent. They approve the expenditures made by the Care Team and issue funds based on your budget. The Trustee is your pet’s advocate, helping to ensure the care it receives aligns with your wishes.

Foster

Our Foundation believes that by adding the Foster to the Pet Trust Care Team, your pet has someone else to keep them safe and healthy.

EDMAF has expanded the role of the Foster. We want them to assess the pets’ needs, provide necessary interventions, and keep the pet in their home until the pet adjusts and there is a proper Caretaker forever home.

The Foster is like a guardian angel for the pet and checks on them regularly to be sure all their needs are being fulfilled by the Caretaker according to the guidelines of your Pet Trust.

Caretaker

Your pet’s Caretaker is specially selected by you and/or your Trustee to be the forever home for your pet. They will nurture and love your pet as you did.
The Caretaker’s heart and home are open to your pet regardless of its age or health. They will maintain your dog or cat’s lifestyle because they understand how important the Pet Trust guidelines are and they’ve agreed to manage your pet’s care according to the details. The Caretaker is your pet’s new family and should always try their best to provide the level of care you expect.
