Foster Guardianship

EDMAF determines the criteria for fostering, decides which animals are eligible for foster care, and appoints foster caregivers from a pre-approved list of trained providers. EDMAF will require you to go fill out a foster application, a Homeward Pet Foster Care Agreement, as well as attend a Dog Foster Orientation Class prior to being accepted as a foster parent. EDMAF foster care volunteers may always refuse any specific request for any reason. EDMAF staff will inform you of any medical treatments to be administered, the anticipated length of the foster-care period, the objectives of each particular placement (restoring to health, rearing to adoptable age, socialization, etc.), and any other restrictions or expectations we may have.

You will be expected to keep the animal safe and secure, return it to EDMAF when requested to do so, and not promise the animal to anyone, or imply that you have the authority to approve a potential adoption. EDMAF retains ownership of all animals placed in foster care and will make all decisions regarding the adoption & placement of the animals fostered.
EDMAF cannot accommodate people fulfilling court-ordered community service within the Foster Care Program. EDMAF does not accept into this program those convicted of violent crimes or crimes involving animal cruelty or neglect. Students seeking credit for school service requirements should speak with the Foster Care Coordinator to discuss the program before proceeding.

Unless otherwise arranged, the foster parent is responsible for providing all food, litter, bedding, and toys for the animal while it is in their care at home. The foster parent is responsible for transporting the animals to and from EDMAF for veterinary appointments, surgery, behavior evaluations, vaccinations, etc., The foster parent may also be responsible for transporting the animal to and from adoption events, and to off-site training classes, at the Foster Care Coordinator’s discretion. Upon returning your foster animal to EDMAF you will be required to fill out a brief questionnaire about your foster animal’s behavior and personality.
I have read and understood the statements above. I certify that all the information contained in this application is true and correct. I understand that although EDMAF takes reasonable care to screen animals for foster care placement, it makes no guarantees relating to the animals’ health, behavior or actions. I understand that I receive foster care animals at my own risk and can decline to accept any animal for which EDMAF has asked me to provide care. I acknowledge that EDMAF is not responsible for any property damage or personal injury suffered by me, members of my household, including my own animals, or any third parties during a foster placement and I assume liability to provide adequate controls to prevent such damage or injury.

EDMAF foster dogs and puppies must be supervised at all times when outdoors.
If you don’t have a fenced in yard, do you agree to keep your foster dog on a leash at all times outside?

EDMAF considers our Foster Families to be essential to the welfare and proper placement of our pets and wishes the experience to be enjoyable and free from misunderstandings.  Please note that we have the following guidelines:

The Foster Family will follow all relevant procedures and guidelines of EDMAF regarding the pet placed in the foster home and will not make decisions or take actions regarding the pet’s veterinary care or placement without prior approval from EDMAF.

The veterinarians working with EDMAF bill EDMAF directly for approved medical services provided to our pets.  In the event the Foster Family expends funds for pre-approved veterinary care, EDMAF will reimburse the Foster Family.

The Foster Family will provide the pet with humane care and maintain the pet in accordance with all current state, county, and municipal laws and ordinances while the pet resides with the Foster Family.

The Foster Family will provide the pet with necessary exercise and will not keep the pet chained or restrained.  EDMAF pets should not be kept as “outside only” pets unless prior approval has been received from EDMAF.

The Foster Family agrees to provide the pet with adequate food, water, shelter, affection, socialization, exercise, medical assistance, and to strive to increase the adoptability of the pet.  If assistance with food is needed, EDMAF will provide food upon request.

If the pet cannot be kept by the Foster Family, the Foster Family shall notify EDMAF immediately.  The pet SHALL NOT BE SOLD, ABANDONED, RELINQUISHED TO A SHELTER OR POUND OR ANY THIRD PARTY WITHOUT THE PRIOR APPROVAL OF CARE.

THE FOSTER FAMILY UNDERSTANDS THAT CARE AND ITS REPRESENTATIVES HAVE LIMITED INFORMATION REGARDING THE TEMPERAMENT OF THE PET OR ITS HABITS.  THE FOSTER FAMILY WILL TAKE ALL REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS (THROUGH THE USE OF CRATES, LEASHES, SUPERVISION, AND COMMON SENSE) TO ENSURE THE PET DOES NOT RUN LOOSE, BECOME A NUISANCE, DESTROY PROPERTY, INJURE OR BE INJURED BY ANOTHER ANIMAL OR INJURE OR BE INJURED BY ANY PERSON.

The pet is and shall remain the property of EDMAF and may be removed by EDMAF from the Foster Family at any time and without prior notice.

The Foster Family agrees to be courteous, helpful and honest to potential adopters and to fully cooperate in accommodating those who wish to see the pet.

In the event the Foster Family wishes to permanently adopt the pet, a EDMAF Adoption Contract must be submitted to EDMAF.

The Foster Family should ensure that all of its pets are up to date on their vaccinations (including, without limitation, bordetella, parvo, corona, rabies, distemper) prior to bringing the pet into the foster home.
